Organisation & Funding

FEN is a research unit that is part of the ETH Zurich. Its form of organisation ensures that it will be able to pursue its research activities independent of the origin of its funding.

Type of the projects performed by FEN and their funding sources are as follows:

  • Industrial research projects funded by a sponsoring body, the “Swiss Association for Energy and Network Research” (Schweizerische Gesellschaft für Energie- und Netzforschung - SGEN*).
  • Projects offering consulting services to electric/gas utilities, grid operators, vendors etc.
  • Academic research projects funded by national and international agencies (SFOE, Horizon, ERA-net etc.)

In addition to the aforementioned activities, FEN represents the Swiss Federal Office of Energy in "International Smart Grids Action Network" (external pageISGAN). The details on the activities are here.

* SGEN consists of a general assembly, where all sponsors are represented, and of an executive committee. Furthermore, the executive committee, general assembly and stakeholders (federal government, grid operators, industry, NGOs) constitute the steering committee, which serves as a link to the research unit.
